Springtime for teachers is a whirlwind of assessments, field trips, evening events and counting down the days to summer. Thus, it’s been a little tricky for me to come home and put myself in a writing mood. My apologies for that. However, last night’s Payback had too much going on to be ignored, so let’s get to it. Here are the lessons learned from WWE Payback.
Tonight 100,000 people will file into AT&T Stadium in Dallas, TX for a history making WrestleMania. There has been a lot of apathy towards this event due to the lackluster build and some people not being a fan of the main event. Instead of focusing on the negative in this column I am going to give my prediction on who will win each match and give a piece of positivity to each one. So let’s dive right into the WrestleMania card.
Back in the early 1990’s, wrestling companies were looking for ways to make their Pay-Per-Views stand out. For the World Wrestling Federation, there were unique events like Survivor Series and Royal Rumble. (At one point, class, all of the SS matches were elimination tags, and the Royal Rumble was always. . . ALWAYS. . . the last match of the night).
WCW had begun to head down a similar road. (The very first “War Games”, basically a Survivor Series match held in a steel cage, also took place in 1993.) In November of that month, they designed an entire PPV around another concept they had done twice before, this one called Battlebowl. As WWE Network explains, “Stars are forced to randomly team up through a Lethal Lottery. Winning teams advance to the enormous Battlebowl Battle Royal main event.”
